LEADER

Dr. Wendy O’Brien is a philosopher with over 35 years’ experience teaching in academic and non-academic environments, including at Humber Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning, Wilfrid Laurier University, Harvard, Oxford and the Art Gallery of Ontario. She’s conducted many seminars and webinars for Classical Pursuits and Worldwide Quest on a wide range of subject matter that lie at the intersection of philosophy, literature and the visual arts.

READINGS

For this seminar, participants will be sent PDFs and links to readings.

Faced with climate crisis, the rise of populism and the ever-widening gap between the rich and the poor, it seems as if there is little grounds for being hopeful about the future. But maybe. . . maybe such a response to the existential crises of our time is premised on a misunderstanding of the nature of hope. In this four-week seminar, we’ll take up the challenge of considering the nature, the logic and the ethics of hope as we draw on the writings of philosophers, scientists, poets and novelists including St. Augustine, Thomas Hobbes, Emily Dickinson, Rebecca Solnit and Jane Goodall, to better understand the phenomenon of hope.
