A Portrait of An Artist As A Young Man
James Joyce, Everyman Library, 1991 (reissued)
ISBN:9780679405757
Edition recommended, but not required
“Welcome, O life! I go to encounter for the millionth time the reality of experience and to forge in the smithy of my soul the uncreated conscience of my race.” So ends Joyce’s masterpiece A Portrait of An Artist As A Young Man and so began a new literary tradition. In this seminar we undertake a reading of this text, considering the many and various ways Joyce’s innovations in and through this text challenged and changed conventional notions of identity construction, of the bildungsroman, and of writing itself.
