By the pricking of my thumbs …

… a Great Books weekend this way comes. Explore all manners of literary wickedness at the Great Books Foundation’s annual Chicago weekend, May 3 to 5, 2019. Book lovers from across North America will gather to discuss four readings that centre on the wickedness people contemplate and perpetrate:

    • The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood
    • “The Grand Inquisitor,” a chapter from The Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoyevsky
    • “A Good Man is Hard to Find” by Flannery O’Connor
    • The Meaning of Human Existence by Edward O. Wilson

The Great Books Chicago weekend is one of our favourite events of the year for both the quality of the discussions and the feeling of fellowship. People diverse in age, profession, and background are united by their enthusiasm for sharing ideas. Many participants are active in both Great Books and Classical Pursuits, including Toronto Pursuits 2019 leaders Denise Ahlquist and Nancy Carr. We at Classical Pursuits are very proud to be a part of this vital community.

There will also be opportunities to enjoy springtime in the heart of Chicago, including a Saturday evening outing to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra with conductor Riccardo Muti. I always make time for a visit to the Art Institute and an Italian beef on Michigan Avenue!
