We are in saga country! Njal’s saga. I have never breathed air this fresh. It makes me want to inhale deeply and savour the deep pleasure of breathing. The sky and the quality of light are magnificent.
We are staying on a working farm, where we continue to enjoy amazing views, surprisingly excellent food, and wonderful hospitality. At the Saga Centre in Hvolsvöllur, some of us pitched in to work on long tapestry depicting tales from Njal’s saga. Later we attended a talk by a prominent playwright on Icelandic feminism and the role of women in the arts. I remain so impressed by the literary accomplishments of this tiny population and by Icelanders’ love of books and reading. As this BBC Travel article “Iceland As Literary Muse” notes, Reykjavik is one of only six UNESCO Cities of Literature.
