ROUGH LOVE IN A RUGGED LAND
Wuthering Heights in Cornwall
DESTINATION
Cornwall County and
London, England
DATES
May 15 – 23, 2010 (8 nights)
READINGS
Emily Brontë, Wuthering Heights
Description/Itinerary
Unless one can envision a passion that transcends the grave one cannot begin to understand the love of Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff. And until one imagines a landscape capable of containing such a love is it possible to understand the magnetism of the jagged coast and the history-filled moors of Cornwall.
We will be returning to the south coast of Cornwall, to the unspoiled fishing village of Looe with its pretty old buildings, twisting streets, smugglers’ taverns and Cornwall’s finest restaurants. We will stay once again at the magnificently-situated Trehaven Manor, a gracious stone house offering spectacular views over the ever-changing estuary.
Mark Camp will show us the best of Cornwall, the Cornwall you can only reach on foot. In between discussions, we will explore a county of contrasting landscapes – from the salt sprayed sea cliffs, to patchwork fields criss-crossed by deep narrow lanes, from high rocky crags to long sun drenched sandy beaches.
This trip will be a thoughtful ramble through Bronte’s masterpiece brought to life by the rugged countryside of southwest England. Walks will vary in duration and difficulty.
And our time in Cornwall will be bookended by two nights in London’s literary Bloomsbury district. We will travel to and from Looe by train.
