Description

ART: Everything that Rises: A Book of Convergences

Winner of the 2006 National Book Critics Circle Award, Lawrence Weschler’s Everything that Rises: A Book of Convergences picks up where John Berger left off in his seminal Ways of Seeing. For example, Weschler looks at photographs of Ground Zero and notices, with a profound sense of recognition, resemblances between the vestigial steelwork of the twin towers and a painting of the American flag by Jasper Johns. Images of the Challenger space disaster, fathers and daughters, Monica Lewinsky and neural pathways are all grist for his mill.

As he tracks resonances between works of art and visual phenomena (ranging from the microscopic to the cosmological), Weschler’s synthesis is bracing and empowering.

For an hour each morning, participants will discuss aspects of Everything that Rises, then spend the rest of each forenoon seeking out our own convergences during daily encounters with downtown art and architecture.

“AN IMAGE ENTERS IN, RUSHES DOWN THROUGH THE TENSED,
ARRESTED MUSCLES, PLUNGES INTO THE HEART AND IS GONE.”

“The Panther,” Rainer Maria Rilke
